There has been a great deal of discussion as to whether entrepreneurs were just born that way. To determine if entrepreneurs are born or made, we should first examine the definition as set out in a Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online. Entrepreneur comes from the French word "entreprendre" meaning to undertake. The definition is "one who organizes, manages and assumes the risk of a business or enterprise."

As stated by Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines, an entrepreneur must possess leadership qualities and the strength to go it alone. However, in addition to these in-born building blocks, chief characteristics of entrepreneurs that can be learned are the ability to see and articulate a vision and to build and motivate a team.

In my opinion, if one is born with certain personality traits, it can assist in the entrepreneur venture, but entrepreneurs are born and made both. Attitude is a key element in your success. So not matter where you are in life, opportunities still exist. You can become a boomer entrepreneur.

You already have that great entrepreneur idea and want to develop it on your own. You may want to set up an operation that is similar to a successful venture you have been studying. Starting from square one can be done, but you must spend the time and effort to ensure that you have a well laid out business plan with sufficient capital. You can start by asking several questions:

  1. Are you good with people?
  2. Do you like doing the day to day work that is necessary?
  3. Have you done primary and secondary research?
  4. Are you competent in basic business skills?
  5. Are you prepared for potential liability?

2. Franchising (Click here for more details on Franchise Ideas)

A franchise can be a great way to start a business. This is especially true if you don't have much business or management experience. However, you build your business the first few years so you should not expect to make as much during that period. You will receive help in attracting customers using well-known franchises, but franchising is more like starting a business than buying an existing business.

Consider franchising as a way to get support and a kick-start to your business. There are franchises for just about any discipline, service or product in existence.

3. Buy a Small Business (Click here to investigate Buying a Business)

Buying a small business, or a large one, may be just the approach for you. This is one of the best entrepreneur ideas since your chances for success should be improved by buying an existing operation once you know its true value and the reason it has succeeded in the past. Due diligence is critical to ensure you have all of the needed information to make a decision.
