Technology for Seniors -
The Internet Transforms Our Brains

Does technology for seniors help improve brain flexibility? If so, just how does the internet for seniors transform their capability?

The quick answer is “YES”. Internet use could potentially enhance brain function and cognition in older adults, especially those with little internet experience. It causes neural activity which changes their brain activity after just one week of online internet use.

This is the result of a study by UCLA, that was presented October 19, 2009 at the meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Chicago, Illinois as reported by FoxNew.com. For access to the entire article, click here.

This does not mean that the internet for seniors is a magic solutions to cognitive improvement. But it appears that it can be one tool to keep one’s brain challenged. It is recognized that as one ages, a number of changes takes place, including atrophy and a reduction in brain cell activity.

Just as the process of working crossword puzzles stimulates the brain, frequent use of the internet may affect the cognitive processing capability and transform the way that information is encoded by the brain.

The study results show that if one has not had much experience using the internet that performing internet searches even for a short period of time can enhance brain functions.

Brain stimulation, especially involving areas in which one may not have had any prior experience, seems to be a good direction for us all. To me, that infers that technology for seniors can be very beneficial, whether we are talking about using a smart phone, internet searching, participating in Social Networking like Facebook, starting a blog, building a website or just looking up your ancestry.
